Monkshood

(Aconitum napellus)

Monkshood is a striking perennial with tall spires of hood-shaped deep blue to violet flowers. A classic cottage garden plant, it blooms in mid- to late summer, adding vertical interest and rich colour to borders. Hardy and low-maintenance, it thrives in cooler climates and is highly attractive to pollinators — but all parts of the plant are poisonous, so handle with care.

Description

Type: Hardy perennial
Best Grown: Borders, cottage gardens, pollinator-friendly planting
Sowing Time: February–June or September–October (can benefit from cold stratification)
Flowering Time: June–August
Spacing: 30–45 cm apart
Height: 90–150 cm tall
Difficulty: Moderate (slow to germinate)

Why grow it?

  • Tall, architectural flower spikes in deep blue-violet shades
  • Excellent cut flower (handle with gloves)
  • Thrives in cooler climates
  • Long-lived once established
  • Pollinator-friendly in summer

How to grow: Sow indoors February–June, or in autumn for natural winter chilling. Seeds often need a period of cold to germinate — either sow outside in a sheltered seedbed or stratify in the fridge for 3–6 weeks before sowing. Transplant seedlings to their final position in rich, moist but well-drained soil. Prefers partial shade but tolerates full sun in cooler areas.

Usage ideas: Ideal for the back of borders, cottage gardens, or pollinator planting schemes. Pairs beautifully with delphiniums, lupins, and foxgloves.

Caution: All parts of the plant are poisonous. Wear gloves when handling and keep away from children and pets.
