Ragged Robin

(Silene flos-cuculi, syn. Lychnis flos-cuculi)

Ragged Robin is a beautiful native wildflower with delicate, frilly pink petals that bring colour and movement to gardens and meadows. Loved by bees and butterflies, it thrives in damp, sunny-to-part-shaded spots, making it perfect for pond edges, wetter borders, and naturalistic planting schemes. Once established, it self-seeds gently, creating drifts of flowers from late spring into summer.

Flowering Time: May–July
Spacing: Plant 20–30 cm apart
Height: 30–60 cm tall
Difficulty: Easy in the right conditions

Why grow it?

  • Native wildflower supporting pollinators
  • Frilly pink blooms for naturalistic planting
  • Thrives in damp soils
  • Low-maintenance and hardy once established

Best growing conditions: Plant in moist, fertile soil in sun or light shade. Ideal near water features or in areas that stay damp through the summer. Can tolerate periods of waterlogging but will struggle in dry, sandy soils without irrigation. Cut back spent flowers to encourage a second flush or leave to self-seed for a natural look.

Usage ideas: Ideal for wildlife-friendly planting, pond margins, or adding splashes of colour to damp meadow areas. Pairs beautifully with other moisture-loving plants such as meadowsweet, flag iris, and purple loosestrife.

Plants supplied: Ready to be planted directly into their final position.

Cost: We ask for a minimum donation of £1 per plant to cover the cost of organic compost. All profits go back to Moffat Seed Library to help us keep going.
