Sunflower: Zine

It was seeds for this sunflower that first inspired the idea for the Moffat Seed Library. These tall, bright blooms have cheerful yellow petals, sometimes tinged with brown, and look stunning in garden borders. They’re brilliant for attracting pollinators — and for producing your own homegrown seeds. Just be ready to race the Blue Tits if you want to save seeds for next year!

How to grow: Sow direct outdoors April–May, or start indoors for an earlier start. Sow seeds 1.5–2 cm deep, spacing 30–45 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot and water regularly. Tall varieties may need staking. Harvest flower heads when seeds are plump and the back of the head turns yellow.
